In a recent development, Abu Dhabi’s Sir Bani Yas Island will welcome a team of archaeologists from 13 – 28 October 2015.
The team will begin excavation of a historic house in the now abandoned Al Zahir Village on the northern coast of the island. Five years ago, Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara, developed by Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) on Sir Bani Yas Island, witnessed the unveiling of remains of a seven century Christian monastery. Since then, several archaeological surveys have been carried out on the island, identifying a number of sites associated with historic settlement. These include three cemeteries, a dry stone walled mosque, and water cistern, the latter being noted within a walled date palm garden.
The team has been assembled by the Historic Environment Department of Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) and will be led by expert, Dr Mark Beech, head of the Coastal Heritage and Paleontology section.
