Garuda Indonesia has announced that it plans to join the SkyTeam airline alliance. The national carrier will meet delegates from SkyTeam and its partner airlines in Jakarta, Indonesia, to sign an official agreement and discuss the processes leading up to full membership. The president director of Garuda Indonesia, Emirsyah Satar, confirmed the move last week, promising a better service to passengers. SkyTeam is currently expanding its presence in Asia, having recently added its first Southeast Asian carrier, Vietnam Airlines, and Taiwan’s China Airlines confirmed as coming on board in 2011. “We intend to add more Asian carriers to the group and thereby firmly position SkyTeam as the alliance for Asia,” said SkyTeam’s chairman, Leo van Wijk. “There are specific regions where we want to strengthen our network even further to better meet demand of our customers. These are Latin America, India, Southeast Asia, and the larger Asia Pacific. We are activity looking to fill these gaps.” SkyTeam currently comprises 13 airlines, including Air France, China Southern Airlines, Delta Air Lines, KLM and Korean Air. The alliance connects to 841 destinations in 162 countries. Garuda would add approximately 30 destinations across the Indonesian archipelago.
