The budding Sri Lankan tourism sector has not gone unnoticed by the Chinese who have just received approval from the Sri Lankan government to build a luxury hotel in Colombo.
The government gave China National Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) the green light on its proposal to build another luxury hotel and shopping complex around Galle Face Green area in the heart of the Sri Lankan capital.
The Skyline Hotel and Rainbow Multifunctional Complex will cost nearly US$500 million (INR2,267 crore).
This is the second such project passed by the cabinet in Colombo which has also agreed a deal with Shangri-La Hotels who will also invest US$500 million to build a 500-room luxury hotel-shopping complex in the same area.
The project is to be completed by 2013.
According to the Colombo Page, the government says the proposed projects will assist developing Colombo as a Middle Income Commercial City and also to accommodate nearly 2.5 million tourists expected by 2016.
