Snowstorms create havoc in China
China issued a severe weather warning on Monday, with further heavy snows expected. AFP reported that the heaviest snowfalls in 50 years left hundreds of thousands stranded ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
The warning of severe snowstorms came after Premier Wen Jiabao called for “urgent” action to combat blackouts and transport chaos as millions of Chinese struggle to return home.
Icy conditions forced seven airports to shut at the weekend, with the southern city of Guangzhou particularly hard-hit.
Thousands were also stranded at the city’s train station after a power failure on Saturday night.
