The county of PyeongChang, in southeastern South Korea, has been chosen to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The decision was announced last night at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Durban, South Africa. PyeongChang received 95 votes – well ahead of the German city of Munich (25) and Annecy, France (seven).
The Korean bid promised to be the “most compact, efficient Games plan” according to PyeongChang committee CEO, Cho Yang-ho. Its slogan, ‘New Horizons’ also nodded to the fact that the Winter Olympics has never been hosted in South Korea. Asia has twice hosted the event – both times in Japan – in 1972 (Sapporo) and 1998 (Nagano). Seoul also hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics. The 2018 win is a case of third time lucky for PyeongChang, which failed with bids to host the 2010 and 2014 Games.
Soputh Korea’s President, Lee Myung-bak, called the success of the bid “a victory for the people of Korea”.
