With a rise in inflation, stuttering sterling and some popular destinations doubling in price during the school holiday period, those considering a half-term holiday should consider alternatives to the tried and traditional.
Hotel price comparison website and mobile app HotelsCombined has researched the most affordable destinations still available to book for a half-term break abroad.
A HotelsCombined spokesperson said: “With the pound continuing to falter against the Euro, those looking for an affordable half-term break in Europe should consider alternatives to the usual hot spots. Bookings to Turkey were naturally reduced in 2016 and it appears Greece, Malta and Bulgaria provided an alternative for UK holidaymakers. Perhaps as a result of the demand, their average hotel booking costs rose, increasing 19%, 13% 23% respectively. If cost is a priority, check out Cyprus, Hungary and even Romania for an affordable half-term break as these three destinations have all shown year on year reductions of average hotel booking costs of 10%.
“The Baltics have enjoyed more and more visits from Brits over recent years and their popularity may have contributed to rising holiday costs in Estonia and Lithuania, which show cost increases of 15% and 9% respectively. A decrease of 12% in costs of hotels in Latvia suggests there are bargains to be found for those not wedded to the warmer weather in southern Europe.
“While Hungary, Romania and Latvia may offer significant savings, weather may be a factor. For Brits seeking short haul sun, Spain continues to offer good value, as accommodation prices appear not to have risen in line with increased demand.
“For long haul holidaymakers, Vietnam with an almost 30% dip in holiday cost from last year – may provide a cost effective half-term holiday of a lifetime.”
