SpiceJet cancels planned services from Delhi
SpiceJet has abandoned plans to expand services from New Delhi as the 344% hike in airport charges makes flights unviable.
The carrier will operate just four of its new Bombardier Q400 turboprops from Delhi, not of seven as it originally planned, adding services in other cities instead.
Chief Executive Officer Neil Mills told Bloomberg: “The number of destinations you can serve out of Delhi is huge, but not at the charges that they have got in now. We now have a different plan.”
Delhi International Airport Ltd took a decision last year to raise airport charges ten-fold to cover operating costs and recoup invested capital following the facility upgrade. As of 15 May, India’s airport regulator approved a 344% increase in charges.
