Asian bicycle tour operator SpiceRoads has launched a new itinerary that takes guests from the northernmost tip to the southernmost point of Sri Lanka.
The ‘Sri Lanka Tip to Tip by Road Bike’ starts in the northern plains of the Jaffna Peninsula and travels down through the central highlands and tea plantations, including a stop in Kandy. It then continues southwards before ending on the beaches of the India Ocean.
This 12-day tour covers nine days of riding over 1,000km of paved roads. SpiceRoads said there are “a few rough sections” but most climbs are “easy gradients of 5%”.
“Sri Lanka is an often overlooked holiday destination – mostly due to the recently ended civil war – but it is now a vibrant and safe island to explore,” SpiceRoads said. “For much of the past three decades large areas of the north were off limits, but this final frontier is now open.”
The trips are led by guides and will be supported by an air-conditioned bus with a supply of cold drinks and fresh fruit.
Five departures are available in 2015, in May, June, July, August and September.
