Officials from Singapore and Malaysia have agreed to expand the bilateral air services agreement between both countries. The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation has reported that the new agreement gives low-cost carriers (LCCs) of both countries the right to operate between Singapore and three cities in Malaysian Borneo – Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Miri. Effective 1 November, Singaporean and Malaysian LCCs will be permitted to operate seven weekly flights to these cities, although this will be increased to fourteen flights from 1 March. Malaysia’s AirAsia has already announced it will launch services on these routes.
“This is a significant step forward for Singapore and Malaysia, coming shortly after both countries have agreed to fully liberalise the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur sector from 1 December 2008 onwards,” said Choi Shing Kwok, Permanent Secretary for Singapore’s Ministry of Transport.
