China’s soul budget carrier, Spring Airlines, is beginning its international expansion with plans to set up a subsidiary in Japan.
Wang Zhenghua, Spring Airlines’ Chairman and Founder told an audience at Shanghai Jiaotong University on Saturday that “Spring Airlines is planning to open a company in Japan”. Speaking to China Daily on Monday, an airline spokesman confirmed that preparations are currently under way to set up a subsidiary there.
The airline has been exploring international markets since it launched international flights to Japan in July last year. Today, the country remains the carrier’s most popular destination occupying 20% of Spring’s international services. The airline sees potential for services between China and 100 airports across Japan. Spring Airlines spokesperson, Zhang Wuan, added that the company has been approached by 10 prefectures in Japan about launching regular flights.
Zhang, however, expressed concern over Japan’s foreign investment policy which limit the company to a 33% stake. Spring is worried that this will affect their control on decision-making.
