Bangkok, Thailand (September 7, 2009) – SpiceRoads Cycling Adventures in Asia has launched Sri Lanka Spice Trails, a new bicycle tour for 2010. Biking from the coast to the inland highlands, this cycling adventure along quiet back roads takes in five UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The journey starts with glimpses of sails on local fishing boats but soon riders will be heading uphill and to cooler temperatures as they cycle through tea plantations and are awed by a multitude of Buddhist and Hindu monuments, including those at Dambulla, the rock fortress of Sigiriya, the once medieval capital of Polonnaruwa and the temples of Kandy. The tour heads south to the fortress town of Galle and ends at the capital Colombo.
The natural abundance of Sri Lanka is also evident on this cycling adventure with a wildlife safari in the Wasgomuwa National Park, a ride through the Knuckles wilderness, a visit to tea plantations and a cycle on the so-called spice road, the source of the tantalizing spices that contribute to making the local cuisine so delicious.
Accommodation on this trip is as varied as the riding — ranging from spa resorts to colonial bungalows on tea estates to remote rustic lodges to the architectural wonder designed by the famous Geoffrey Bawa.
Cycling 770 kilometers in 10 cycling days on country roads makes this a great ride for novices and experts alike. The color and spice of Sri Lanka makes for a captivating destination not easily forgotten.
