Sri Lanka has launched the first in a series of ‘Signature Tours’ targeting US tourists. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, is hosting a group of 25 tourists from 20-29 August, accompanied by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the US, Jaliya Wickramasuriya. The 12-day itinerary includes travel from Colombo to the UN World Heritage-listed site, Galle Fort, and then a visit to the tea fields of Nuwara Eliya. Working with the Embassy, the itinerary was organised by Sri Lankan tour operator, Jetwing Travels. The Embassy plans to arrange Signature Tours on an annual basis.”It is our pleasure to bring this group of American travellers to Sri Lanka,” said Ambassador Wickramasuriya. “I look forward to introducing the travellers to our island of unrivalled splendour and our welcoming culture. I know our journey will be an eye-opening experience that will highlight Sri Lanka’s boundless potential.”Tourism has been growing rapidly in Sri Lanka since the end of the country’s civil war last year. The number of tourist arrivals increased 50% during the first half of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009. The US Department of State lifted a travel advisory to the island in May.”We believe we are just scratching the surface of our tourism market and we look forward to continued growth,” Ambassador Wickramasuriya added.
