Located 46km from the mainland, the Sri Lankan government is planning to develop the island of Delft into an ecotourism destination. The Island has seen very little development since its occupation by the Dutch 300 years ago, other than the recent introduction of a high-speed ferry service to and from the mainland. At the moment the government is working on various development plans, with authorities signifying an eco focus. The Asia Tribune quotes one official saying that the local government plans to develop ecostructures on the island as is moves to develop tourism infrastructure. It will also renovate existing buildings, to improve the lives of local villagers and give them a direct involvement in the emerging economy. A water supply scheme and the rehabilitation of the salt water exclusion bund have been also recently been approved. Furthermore the island will only accommodate battery-powered vehicles.
