State-run Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM) has increased its intake and is also franchising its courses to private institutions to cater to an expanding industry after the end of a 30-year war, an official was quoted saying.The hotel school runs a four-year hotel management program and a series of shorter specialist course.Lanka Business Online quoted the school chairman Suranga Silva as saying that the core intake had been expanded from 710 to 2,500 by taking in ‘double batches’ at several training centres.The first group of students from the island’s war torn north has now started training at a centre in Koggala in the south of the island he said.Sri Lanka now has about 15,000 registered hotel rooms with plans to triple it by 2016. Silva said each hotel room required two staff for accommodation alone, not counting field staff and related support services.The school had also started franchising its courses to other training schools.”We provide our programs to private sector or public sector institutions which have the capability to run our programmes,” Silva was quoted saying.He was reported saying that hotel schools were mushrooming around the country claiming to be ‘international hotel school’ charging high prices their quality was suspect.
