Star Cruises is planning a major renovation of its largest cruise ship, the 75,000-tonne SuperStar Virgo.
During a three-week dry-dock refurbishment, the company will make upgrades to its 270 balcony cabins, plus the ship’s restaurants and recreational facilities. It will also equip the 13-deck vessel with a new duty free shopping area, tripling the ship’s retail space to more than 560m².
“This US$19.7 million refurbishment of SuperStar Virgo is a reflection of our continuous drive to grow in Asia,” said William Ng, Star Cruises’ chief operating officer.
“SuperStar Virgo will be on her homeport deployment in Hong Kong from April to October next year. Domestic travellers as well as those from China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan are expected to flock to Hong Kong next year to enjoy the top notch accommodation, shopping, leisure, entertainment and dining options available on this ship.”
The expansion of the ship’s duty free area follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier this year between Star Cruises’ parent company, Genting Hong Kong, and the China Duty Free Group. This has already seen the development of a large 450m² duty free shopping area on the SuperStar Gemini liner.
SuperStar Virgo is currently homeported in Singapore, sailing to Malaysia and Thailand. But on 2 April the ship will start a six-month deployment in Hong Kong, offering itineraries to Taiwan, Hainan Island and Vietnam.
