UK holidaymakers taking holidays in the winter are most likely to head to the sun and cities, according to ABTA.
In a recent poll by the association 19% said they are planning a holiday this winter, with 40% opting for a winter sun break and 39% expecting to head to a city.
The number of those looking to go for a wintersports holiday was up from 10% last year to 15% this year, backing reports from operators and accommodation providers that the ski and snowboard industry is seeing a boost this year.
Short-haul destinations dominated the favourite winter sun hotspots including the Canary Islands, Greece, Malta and Tunisia. Further afield the Caribbean, Mexico and Dubai are popular choices.
Young holidaymakers are said to be fuelling a rise in city breaks this winter with most heading to the likes of Amsterdam, Prague, Bruges, Berlin and New York.
Victoria Bacon, ABTA’s head of communications, said: “Winter can be a great time for a holiday as there’s no other season where such a range of holidays are so easily available to British holidaymakers. It’s no wonder that taking a break at this time of year is consistently popular whether people are seeking sun, snow or a city break.”
