Suvarnabhumi expansion set for 2015
Airports of Thailand (AoT) has announced plans to spend US$1.9 million on the expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.
Development work is due to commence in 2015, and take annual passenger capacity from 45 million to 60 million by 2017.
Delays to the airport’s expansion have allowed congestion to reach critical levels, with 52 million passenger expected to pass through the airport in 2012.
Moving LCCs to relieve airport, Don Mueang, will help ease congestion while construction is underway, but there are concerns that current growth rates in air traffic will exceed 60 million before expansion is complete.
