Taiwan and Japan last week signed an open skies agreement, hailed as a breakthrough in bilateral relations. The new agreement permits an unlimited number of carriers to operate scheduled flights between Taiwan and Japanese destinations outside of Tokyo, without limits to frequency or seat capacity. Carriers are also entitled to fifth freedom rights which allows airlines to carry passengers to a third country.
The agreement will result in more flights between the two countries, which is likely to bring prices down. Speaking to The China Post, a representative of the tourism industry in Taiwan was confident the agreement will usher in a triple-win situation for airlines, tourist agencies, and consumers, saying the airlines and tourism industry of both countries can make the markets larger under the “open skies.”
