Taiwan’s government has approved airlines to offer 101 flights in the first week of daily passenger services between the island and China, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) in Taipei was quoted saying.
Bloomberg said five Taiwan-based carriers and nine mainland Chinese airlines would carry out the flights from 15 December to 21 December, quoting a report in the CAA website.
Services will increase to daily from four days a week after the two sides signed agreements last month to boost the number of flights across the Taiwan Strait and establish direct shipping and postal links.
Bloomberg said the changes follow the highest-level talks between the two sides on the island in almost 60 years.
The new deal means airplanes no longer need to detour through Hong Kong airspace.
An AFP report, quoting Taiwan’s transportation ministry, had estimated that local airlines and passengers would save around TW$3 billion (US$89.8 million) a year without the detours.
Direct transportation links have been restricted since Taiwan and China split in 1949
