In a move that would benefit airlines on both sides, Taiwan plans to discuss with China expanding their cross-strait flight routes to include other global destinations.
The talks are expected to take place in mid-2009, a Taiwan official was quoted saying in a Reuters report.
Under their landmark deal signed last July, airlines started offering non-stop charter flights every week between the island and mainland.
Reuters said Taiwan’s carriers, such as China Airlines and Eva Airways, and Chinese airlines like Air China and China Southern Airlines, have long awaited the move to try and boost their business during tough economic times.
If the plan works out, the report said, Taiwan carrier could fly straight from Taipei to a Chinese city, where it can then pick up more passengers, and continue its flight to another city in Europe.
