After a slump in tourist arrivals that has lasted for three years, the Taj Mahal has seen a spike in visitors during the Commonwealth Games (CWG). Officials from the state tourism department expect a 40% increase in the volume of tourists coming to Agra this season, and there are signs that many are choosing to stay around for a day or two. The growth was triggered by the start of the CWG, and authorities are hopeful this will continue into the future reports The Telegraph. Before the Games began, ticket sales were less than 200 per day, but now the numbers are much higher and almost double on a good day. Team visits have helped raise the profile of the attraction among fans and dedicated tours are making it more accessible for sports fans to leave the action behind for a spot of culture.
