TAM Airlines has temporarily halved its direct services from London to Rio de Janeiro for this winter due to a shortage of aircraft. The route will drop from six flights a week to three from 5 November on Fridays, Saturdays and Wednesdays. TAM has been forced to halve the route, which only doubled to six flights a week on 2 August, after it replaced a ‘fuel hungry’ A340 used on its Milan-Sao Paulo route with an A330. The aircraft change has meant an Airbus is not available for extra flights from London, plus Frankfurt will lose three weekly flights. TAM plans to increase flights again once it takes delivery of new aircraft in 2012. Daily services from London and Frankfurt to Sao Paulo will continue, with connections onto Rio.
