Authorities in Tamil Nadu have called upon the Indian government to build a bridge to the Thiruvalluvar Statue.
Member of Parliament Shri Tarun Vijay called on India’s Minister for Tourism, Culture & Civil Aviation, Dr Mahesh Sharma, to allocate funds for the bridge, linking the island statue to the mainland state of Tamil Nadu.
In making the request, he stated that a bridge would make a “significant contribution for India’s culture and especially for the great Tamil society”. He added that millions of tourists currently have to cross rough seas to reach the statue.
Rising 41 metres from its small island home, the Thiruvalluvar Statue was built in 2000 and depicts the famous Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. It is located near the town of Kanyakumari on the southern Coromandel Coast, where the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean meet.
Dr Sharma was also invited to visit the Thiruvalluvar Statue on 11 January 2015.
