The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Shandong Provincial Tourism Administration (SPTA) for co-operation on drawing tourists into Thailand from the province. The deal will see SPTA co-operating with TAT to promote tourism, including regular information exchanges, annual visits by both sides and periodic meetings to re-asses aims. Speaking at the signing, Mr. Yu Chong, SPTA Director said; “Thailand is a destination of fertile tourism resources and as far as I’m concerned, Chinese people, especially those from Shandong, are eager to visit Thailand,” adding that Thailand is an ideal overseas destination for Shandong locals.
The province in eastern China has a population of over 90 million and the country’s eighth highest per capita income, is an important economic zone. Jinan and Qingdao, the province’s two major cities, also have transport links to both Japan and South Korea. Meanwhile TAT Governor Phornsiri Manoham said; “Given that the total number of arrivals from China is a little over 1 million, Shandong has a particularly strong potential for growth that we can’t overlook. We want to welcome and impress these visitors with world-renowned Thai hospitality.” The MoU will run for five years, with possible extension after it expires.
