Hundreds of passengers were held up at Hong Kong International Airport last night as a minor taxi dispute boiled over, the South China Morning Post reported. Taxis blocked all three Kowloon-bound lanes of the North Lantau Highway from 10pm, causing further misery for passengers who had just arrived on a Drogonair flight from Bangkok. Meanwhile it is reported that thousands of punters had to leave the Happy Valley racecourse on foot.
The strike escalated from a minor dispute at the airport taxi rank, as drivers’ anger over a new fare structure that took effect on Sunday boiled over. Police soon arrived to move the taxis blocking the highway.
The Hong Kong action is the latest in a series of taxi driver strikes in China, following previous disruptions in Chongqing, Sanya, and most recently, Chaozhou.
