Phuket and Krabi airports reopened yesterday, after Thai anti-government protesters had occupied runways for two days, forcing the suspension of flights, Reuters has reported. However travel chaos remains, with up to 15,000 passengers stranded at the airport, and rearranged flights set to run into next week.
“The airport resumed operations at about 11am (ICT),” said Vicha Neunlop, Director of Phuket International Airport. It was previously unclear how long the airports would be closed for, with no statements from protesters as to their intentions, other than the resignation of Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej. Airport officials had earlier said the airport would be closed indefinitely.
Airports in Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai were forced to close on Friday as protests spread to southern tourist spots. Service at Hat Yai airport resumed on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s rail services have also been hit by protests. Long-distance passengers train services to the north and south of the country have all ceased running, causing further problems for tourists. In all 76 services have been hit as rail workers stopped working out of sympathy for the protests.
