Thai Airways International (THAI) has confirmed that it will no longer transport shark fins on its flights.
The national carrier said it has now informed all operating stations to comply with the policy, which prohibits the shipment of shark fin products on THAI Cargo flights.
“As part of the world community sharing in the great concern for the protection of endangered species and the environment, Thai Airways International has implemented its own official policy to place an embargo on the shipping of shark fin products on THAI,” said Poonsak Chumchuay, managing director of cargo & commercial mail.
THAI joins several other Asian carriers in banning the transport of shark fins, including Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Cathay Pacific, Asiana Airlines and Korean Air.
An estimated 73 million sharks are killed each year for their fins and flesh.
