Thai Airways is phasing out its so-called ‘ultra long haul’ flights, the Bangkok Post has reported. The moniker refers to flights over 15 hours in duration; routes which only 11 airlines currently operate. However THAI Executive Vice-PresidentPandit Chanapai believes that rising fuel costs have made such flights unfeasible; ”The era of ultra long-haul flights has come to an end,” Pandit told the newspaper in an interview. THAI has recently axed its direct Bangkok-New York flights, and have also announced that its tow other ultra long haul routes, Bangkok-Los Angeles and Bangkok-Auckland, will be suspended in October, replaced by indirect services via Osaka for the LAX flight and either Sydney or Melbourne for the Auckland route. Frequencies on these routes will also be reduced.
