Thai Airways International (THAI) has seen a strong rebound in traffic in June and the second quarter of 2011. Last month, the airline saw demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) rise 8.2% year-on-year – outpacing a 7.4% increase in seat capacity. This allowed THAI’s load factor to rise 0.8 percentage points to 65.8%. Overall for the second quarter of 2011, THAI experienced a 9.8% increase in RPK and a 2.9-point rise in load factor, to 66.5%. The expansion was largely due to THAI’s poor performance in the corresponding periods last year however, when Bangkok was suffering in the aftermath of anti-government protests.
Meanwhile THAI has also announced that it will bring forward the delivery of two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The national carrier will now take delivery of the leased aircraft from India’s Jet Airways on 26 July 2011, rather than 25 October. From 1 August 2011 these aircraft will operate three weekly flights between Bangkok and Madrid.
