Thailand promotes north
Thailand will increase promotional activities for its northern provinces in an effort to boost flagging visitor numbers, the Bangkok Post reported. The government’s promotional push will focus on regional attractions such as national parks, adventure tourism and cultural tourism. The announcement was made by Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on Saturday during a visit to Chiang Mai. During a meeting with regional tourism agencies, the PM stated that the government was looking to increase the region’s tourist capacity and encourage longer stays. He also stated the need for private tourism companies in the region to boost standards and services. Meanwhile Kanok Suwanvisut, Chairman of the Thai Hotels Association, northern section, was quoted saying that average hotel occupancy in Chiang Mai had fallen to just 20%, and called for the government to help by allowing more direct flights to connect Chiang Mai with the rest of the world.
