The Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia, Tony Fernandes, has called upon Thailand to build a dedicated low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT), Bernama has reported. Fernandes made the call after launching the two new promotional campaigns for Thailand, aimed at restoring consumer confidence in the country following the recent political unrest.
Bernama reported Fernandes as saying that Thailand airport operator, Airports of Thailand (AoT) should follow the example of both Malaysia and Singapore and build a dedicated LCCT. He said the LCCT should have a capacity of 10-15 million passengers a year, and added that AirAsia was willing to invest in such a project.
Bangkok’s second airport, Don Mueang, current serves domestic low-cost operators such as a Nok Air and One-Two-Go, while AirAsia operates out of the city’s main hub, Suvarnabhumi.
Fernandes also announced plans to boost services from Bangkok, saying that Thai AirAsia intended to connect the Thai capital with three Indian hubs, as well as opening Bangkok-Bali and Bangkok-Guangzhou services in January 2009.
The new promotional campaigns, ‘Mai Pen Rai Thailand’ (No Problem) and ‘Same Same Thailand’ will see AirAsia offer 100,000 free tickets from its hubs in Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Bangkok and Jakarta.
