The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has reassured the trade and tourists that the country is a safe place to visit, despite ongoing political unrest that has see protests take place in Bangkok.”The current situation is political and not directed at tourists. The escalating situation has been limited to a few areas of Bangkok,” said a TAT statement.”Travel to and tourism activities in the rest of Thailand continue as normal.” However, the authority has advised tourists to avoid visiting the areas where the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship’s (UDD’s) political activities are taking place. The UDD’s political activities continue in certain areas of Bangkok including Ratchaprasong Intersection, Makkawan Rangsan Bridge and Ratchadamnoen Avenue. Tourists have been warned against visiting these areas and have been advised to “remain vigilant at other locations where crowds may gather”. However, the TAT has conceded that “tourists need to make their own decision regarding whether they feel comfortable coming to Thailand”.The TAT and Thai International Airways have confirmed that all of Thailand’s airports are operating as normal and that flight schedules remain unchanged, including those between Bangkok and the Middle East.
