From 1 June, Thailand will launch a new transit-passenger tourism scheme whereby travellers waiting 12 hours or more for their next flights can take one of 10 short tour packages.
The Nation reported that the packages will allow transit tourists to take in beaches, temples, palaces, art galleries, shows, zoos, golf courses, spas, shops or city tours, all within the vicinity of Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Weerasak Kowsurat, Chairman of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said the programme would be on trial for two years with quarterly evaluations. It hopes to draw 1,000 clients a day, with projected annual revenue of THB900 million (US$25 million). Suvarnabhumi currently caters for around 3,000 transit passengers per day.
