Ten of Thailand’s most popular and famous national parks will dramatically reduce their intakes of daily visitors, the Nation reported. The caps, which will be enforced from 1 July onwards, will slash visitor levels by 20-30% on normal days, and by 50% during holiday periods. The drastic measures are hoped to help the parks’ ecosystems recover from the impact of tourism. The national park affected are: Huai Nam Dang, Doi Phahompok, Doi Inthanon and Doi Suthep Pui National Parks in Chiang Mai, Phu Kradueng National in Loei, Nakhon Ratchasima’s Khao Yai National Park, Kanchanaburi’s Erawan National Park, Phetchburi’s Kaeng Krachan National Park, as well as Mu Ko Surin and Mu Ko Similan Marine National Parks in Phang Nga. The measures are also expected to seriously impact the parks’ ability to generate revenue, a sector currently estimated to be worth over Bht400 million (US$12.0 million) annually.
