The Regent Singapore – A Four Seasons Hotels
By Daniel Steffe
When visiting a new destination, it might be your first instinct to a book a hotel at the centre of all the action. This is great in some instances, thrusting you into the mix of the area. But sometimes straying somewhat from the beaten path can provide a more rewarding experience. Singapore offers the perfect case in point. Its tourist and business districts provide a fast-paced, eclectic atmosphere 24 hours a day. By having a hotel just outside of this busy world, you have a true oasis to escape to each day. Whenever the hubbub, the noise and the overbearing salesman get too much, just head back to your hotel to recoup and recover.
The perfect hotel to satisfy this is The Regent Singapore, located about 15 minutes walk from the shopping Mecca, Orchard Road, in the exclusive Tanglin District. If you stay here, you are within easy walking distance to the Botanic Gardens, the trendy restaurants of Dempsey Hill and the high flying life of Holland Village. But you are also just far enough away from scores of tourists who flood the more central locations. It really is the perfect location.
Surrounding a cascading central atrium that rises 12 stories above the lobby, the design of the hotel is classic and understated. Not too little, and not too much. The service is also in perfect balance, with all the little touches you expect from a five-star hotel. It offers the right mix of ‘can I help you sir’ and leaving you to your own devices. The high quality tone is set with a sophisticated sculpture in the forecourt, which adds to the warm, inviting feeling of The Regent.
The 439 rooms and suites all extend the sense of welcoming. The quality of the linen and towels make you feel somewhere special, while the complimentary L’Occitane bath amenities add a nice level of charm. The finishes are of a traditional quality, fusing warm browns and elegant creams to create a glowing and enticing atmosphere. For something extra, the Four Seasons or Premier Suites are the perfect example of a luxury escape.
If the overcrowded restaurant haunts in the central tourist areas also feel too overpowering, then escape back to the hotel for dining that is on equal footing with Singapore’s finest. At Basilico, you’ll find authentic Italian dishes made with fresh and premium Italian produce. Designed by renowned architect Yasuhiro Koichi, the restaurant is stylish, hip and elegant without the arrogance. Local Cantonese fare can be indulged in Summer Palace, where you will be surrounded by fine regional art and furnishings. Or spend a relaxing afternoon at Tea Lounge, enjoying delicious cakes, pastries and 10 lines of premium British teas to choose from. A number of other eating establishments cater for the taste of the day, away from the all encompassing tourist traps.
Escapism is usually the reason we go on holiday. But whilst on holiday, we usually throw ourselves right into the mix of the action and subject ourselves to a tourist overload. By staying away from all this, we can create a sort of escape for our escapism, which offers the best of both worlds. The Regent Singapore might not seem like the best located hotel in Singapore, but when considering the above, perhaps it is.
