In a strongly worded statement, Tiger Airways Australia said it was “astonished” that Qantas and Jetstar have “abandoned” the Australia-Malaysia route.
The end of the international service comes as Qantas announced cuts last week. Jetstar has also cuts its services to Malaysia after only nine months of operations.
“Jetstar’s actions add to the carnage the Australian international tourism industry is facing at the hands of the ‘national carrier’,” Tony Davis, Chief Executive of Tiger Aviation said.
“We are astonished that Qantas/Jetstar have turned their back on Malaysia, one of Australia’s most important trading partners, a powerhouse of economic growth in the region and an important growth market for inbound tourism.
“This decision means that no Australian based airline now serves Malaysia.”
Tiger said it has been asked by the Australian State and Territory governments and tourism groups to quickly “fill the gap”.
Davis said the Australian Tourism industry was too important to the nation’s economy to be subjected to the “vested interest of a single listed company, Qantas”.
