Tigerair Australia is planning a change in its services to the Whitsunday Islands.
From 1 April 2014, the low-cost carrier will launch a new direct flight to Whitsunday Coast Airport – the closest gateway to the popular Queensland islands. Services will operate three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, direct from Sydney.
This new route will come at the expense of Tigerair’s existing Sydney-Mackay route however, which will cease operating in February 2014.
Meanwhile, the low-cost carrier has also announced plans to increase the frequency of its flights between Melbourne and Mackay – another Queensland hub that lies close to the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef. Tigerair will add two more weekly flights on the Melbourne-Mackay route, running every Wednesday and Saturday from April to October 2014.
“We have witnessed overwhelming demand from budget travellers wanting to gain easy access to Airlie Beach and surrounding areas,” said Tigerair Australia’s commercial director, Carly Brear. “Our decision to introduce the new Sydney–Whitsunday Coast route, whilst removing the Sydney– Mackay service, is based on consumer demand.”
Ms Brear added that the new direct service between Sydney and Whitsunday Coast would serve the “all-important backpacker market”.
