The budget offshoot of Singapore Airlines started nine flights today from its Melbourne base to Rockhampton, Mackay and the Gold Coast.
“Tiger Airways has well and truly stamped its pawprint on Australian low fare
travel. Based on the number of bookings we have had I can easily say that
Australians have warmly embraced their new Tiger” said Tiger Airways Group chief executive Tony Davis.
Tiger Airways has announced plans to launch flights to Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Newcastle, Canberra, Launceston, Hobart and Sunshine Coast in the
coming weeks and months, including Alice Springs.
But that had to wait till March 1 as Australian national carrier Qantas has not found it possible to provide any form of third party ground handling at the airport, Tiger said in a statement.
“Qantas, who is the monopoly provider of ground handling services at Alice Springs
Airort, has advised that it is unable to provide any form of ground handling services to Tiger Airways at any price, even after Tiger Airways offered to reschedule the time of its flights.
“This is despite Qantas providing similar services to numerous airlines across
Australia and having previously supplied Tiger Airways with similar services in Darwin,” the statement said.
