Tokyo has been ranked as the most expensive city in Asia, with Singapore and Hong Kong taking second and third positions respectively, according to the UBS Prices and Earnings 2009 study. Released yesterday, the study compared living costs in 73 cities around the world based on data collected in March and April this year.
Globally, Oslo was found to be the world’s most expensive city, followed by Zurich, Copenhagen, Geneva, Tokyo and New York. Singapore ranked 24th in the global listing, with Hong Kong coming in 28th. Other Asia Pacific cities featuring in the list included Sydney (38th), Shanghai (41st), Seoul (43rd), Auckland (45th) and Taipei (46th). Indian cities propped up the table, with New Delhi and Mumbai placed at 72nd and 73rd respectively. In the Middle East, Dubai ranked top (19th globally), followed by Doha (39th) and Manama (47th).
The UBS report noted that the Asia Pacific region features the greatest spread between the most expensive and the cheapest city. While Tokyo ranks as one of the world’s five costliest cities, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Delhi and Mumbai all feature in the bottom five.
