Travel safety specialist beTravelwise is giving travellers battling this week’s European strikes five top survival tips.
With strikes imminent in France, Belgium and Spain, which are likely to cause air and road passengers disruption over the next few days, beTravelwise is telling travellers to be prepared and stay vigilant.
“If you are travelling to Europe, fuel shortages, strikes and route blockages are a concern,” says beTravelwise director Saul Shanagher.
His advice is to “go ahead and travel”, but consider the following:
Route planning. Check the route you are taking and whether or not it is near any industrial action or protests. If it is, consider alternative routes and don’t just rely on your Satellite Navigation system; get a road atlas so you can properly plan for disruption and map out alternative routes.
Break your journey. Consider shorter legs and don’t fill up with fuel when you are near empty, but when you see an open station.
Get advice. Government advisories, social media and locals are useful sources of information to help you plan and keep you up to date on any situations as they unfold.
Plan for delays. Keep emergency food and water; travel with spare essentials such as prescription drugs and contact lenses; bring a phone charger or a power bank so you can keep in touch.
Beware of scammers. There will always be people preying on other people’s misfortune; be vigilant, suspicious and trust your instincts.
“Plan ahead as if all might go wrong and you will probably find that nothing does and you’ll have a great trip,” says Shanagher. “Safe travels.”
