Tourism a major player in UN climate solution

Inits position as the as the head UN agency for Tourism, UNWTO stresses theurgency for the tourism sector to promote its sustainable development thatinvolves what is “a coherent strategy on climate and poverty” according to UNSecretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The UNWTO also added that while thedeveloping world is only a marginal contributor to global warming, it is at thecentre of the UN’s Millennium Development goals which aim at fighting povertyand fostering durable development. Poor countries are said to stand to benefitfrom Tourism as a crucial export growth and job driver.
The organisationbelieves that a coherent balance between the sectoral climate response and theneed for economic development of these countries can be reached with policyimagination, technology innovation and financial support.
Attending the meeting at UN Headquarters inNew York on behalf of UNWTO, Assistant Secretary-General Geoffrey Lipman saidthat “Tourism can and must play its part in responding to the global climateimperative and we can and must do this in a way that also advances theindustry’s contribution to poverty alleviation That will be a central task ofour Conference in Davos”.
The Second International Conference onClimate Change and Tourism (Davos, Switzerland, 1-3 October) and the followingMinisterial Summit in London (13 November), will help formulate UNWTO’s inputto the Secretary General’s strategy for the upcoming negotiations under the UNClimate Change Convention in December in Bali, Indonesia.
