Foreigners in the Philippines are extending their visas in ever increasing numbers. Statistics released by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) last week show that 81,287 visa extensions applications were processed and approved from January to July 2011, compared to the 20,804 applications processed and approved in the same period last year.
Immigration Commissioner Ricardo David Junior takes this as a sign the country’s growing popularity among tourists. “It appears that foreign visitors become more attracted to our country after arriving here to the extent that many of them would decide to prolong their stay instead of leaving before the lapse of their authorised initial stay or visa,” he told The Philippines Daily Inquirer.
