Travellers visiting Indonesia have been warned of potential terrorist attacks in the city of Surabaya.
Governments in the UK and Australia have issued advice following a warning from the US Embassy of possible attacks on hotels and banks associated with the US.
The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) updated its information asking travellers to be ‘particularly vigilant’ and of a ‘high threat of terrorism’.
Its page reads: “Terrorist groups continue to plan attacks and have the capacity and intent to carry out these attacks at anytime and anywhere in the country. On 3 January 2015 the US Embassy warned of a potential threat against US associated hotels and banks in Surabaya. You should be particularly vigilant in these areas.”
Indonesia has been growing as a tourism destination in recent years following new routes and hotels. Up to October 2014 its tourism arrivals had increased 8.7% year-on-year to 7.75 million.
