Russia’s Transaero Airlines has taken steps towards launching a low-cost carrier, by introducing ‘discount class’ flights across several domestic and international routes.
The Moscow-based airline will operate 54 discount class flights using its Boeing 737 and Tupolev TU-214 aircraft, from Moscow to destinations including London, Berlin, Rome, Vienna, Tel Aviv, Almaty, Kiev, St Petersburg and Sochi.
All seats on the specified flights will be sold according to low-cost fare rules, with baggage allowances depending on the fare and no pre-ordered special meals. Transaero added however, that food or meals would be offered on some longer routes.
The discount class flights launched for the first time on 14 January 2014.
They follow the recent launch of Aeroflot’s new low-cost carrier, Dobrolet, which was unveiled in October 2013 and will start operating single-class B737 flights from Moscow this spring.
