Western Japan has proved popular with domestic holidaymakers during the summer vacation period. The Kyushu region has seen a significant spike in arrivals compared to last year, benefiting from a new Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train service between Fukuoka and Kagoshima which opened in March. Travel agency JTB told The Japan Times that package tour bookings for the July-September period rose 30% compared with a year ago. Other agencies report similar improvements as a direct result of the new train service.
On the other side of the country, package tour sales to the Tokyo metropolitan area decreased 10-30% and sales at Tokyo Disneyland have been sluggish, while tours to the Tohoku region fell about 40% as visitors steer clear of Fukoshima.
