Turtles released in Phuket

Phuket, Thailand - 6 January 2010 - The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation held turtle release to celebrate the New Year and to raise funds for the care of Sea turtles. In Thailand, turtle release has been a traditional way of merit making for a good long life and brings all luck. Most of the Thais has this tradition for all occasions, such as on birthdays, on auspicious occasions as well as when life is not going so well because the turtles are the symbols of patience and wisdom.
There were more than 200 people jointly released 50 green sea turtles nurtured by Royal Navy. The ceremony was organized by Mai Khao Sub district Administration Organization, Suan Ma Prao community and Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, sponsored by JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, Marriott’s Phuket Beach Club, Marriott Mai Khao Beach, Anantara Phuket Resort & Spa.
The ceremony took place at Mai Khao Beach in front of Pru Jeh Son. There was Buddhist ceremony in the morning. After releasing the turtles, people joined in Tree Planting. The donation goes to Hatchery program by Royal Navy and Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation activity to protect & save the injured turtles and our precious environment.
