Germany has put its air services agreement with the UAE under review over competition concerns around Etihad Airways and airberlin.
German authorities have called for a review into the two airlines’ codeshare agreement for summer 2015 over the concerns, which have not been outlined.
The carriers have already received approval on a codeshare deal for this winter, but the summer schedule is yet to be confirmed.
Saif Mohammad Al Suwaidi, director general of the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority told Zawya that he hoped a decision would be reached soon, and feels it should not have to confirm through Germany as discussions are already underway with the EU.
The UAE wants to launch flights to other German cities out of the review. Services are currently offered to Frankfurt, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Munich. German airline Lufthansa has openly criticised the expansion of Gulf carriers.
