UNESCO adds 21 new sites to World Heritage list

The 34th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting concluded in Brasilia last week, having agreed to add 21 new sites to its preservation list. Among the new cultural sites is Jantar Mantar, in Jaipur, an astronomical observation site built in the early 18th century. Also added included into the Natural list is the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. The new additions take the total number of World Heritage Sites worldwide to 911. Three countries – Kiribati, Marshall Islands and Tajikistan – had sites addedmade the list for the first time. In the Asia Pacific region, the Australian Convict Sites (Australia), the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng (China), Bikini Atoll Nuclear Test Site (Marshall Islands), Historic Villages of Korea (South Korea), the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long-Hanoi (Vietnam) were added toincluded in the cultural list. China Danxia and Phoenix Islands Protected Area (Kiribati) were added to the natural list. The next session will be held in Bahrain in June 2011.
