United Continental has reported a dip in year on year operating performance for August. Demand fell away slightly as revenue passenger miles slipped 2.7% on August 2010. The decline was not unforeseen by the airline which reduced capacity by 1.6%. The correction, however, was not quite enough to save a 0.9 percentage point drop in the airlines’ consolidated load factor of 86.6%. Hurricane Irene also impacted United and Continental’s operations in August, reducing the company’s revenue results by approximately US$40 million in the month. Despite rapid growth in Asia Pacific aviation, the airlines Pacific routes showed little gain in demand compared to August 2010, up just 0.2%. A 1.2% capacity increase resulted in a 0.9 point drop in load factor to 86.3%.
