North eastern Japan has been put on tsunami alert after another earthquake struck offshore. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck 40 kilometres offshore and the tsunami is predicted to have a one metre wave. The news comes as the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) lifted its ‘all but essential’ travel warning to the region. The British Embassy in Tokyo said that tourist arrivals to the city had dropped by 75 percent and Osaka had seen a 50 percent decline in arrivals since last month’s tsunami, despite the fact that they were unaffected by the disaster. As a result, tour operators have been frustrated that the FCO did not update its advice sooner. “We have had several frustrating weeks as a result of the advice which quickly became inaccurate and outdated with regards to the capital city,” explained James Mundy from InsideJapan Tours. “InsideJapan Tours has a fantastic network of staff, partners, suppliers and friends on the ground and receives accurate and reliable information direct from Japan. Tokyo is safe and the vast majority of Japan continues life as normal and we have confidently continued to send our customers to this fantastic country.”
